HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT                                                                                                                  
                                                 
                                        The Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital is a prestigious tertiary care institution which serves people from distant and remote places. It has been offering excellent care to the poor and underprivileged sections of the society. Medical Gastroenterology is an important Super Specialty Department that was started in 1986 by Prof. N. Madanagopalan, Father of Gastroenterology in this part of the world.
Department of Digestive Health and Diseases (Department of Medical Gastroenterology) has been functioning in Govt peripheral hospital, Annanagar, since 6th august 1986, vide G.O. MS. No. 1277. This department has 2 units with 40 beds. DM Higher Speciality course in Medical Gastroenterology was started in this hospital in the year 1999 with two seats This course is the first DM course in the medical history of KMC, Chennai. This course has had the recognition and clearance by the Ministry of Health, Government of India, and Medical council of India, Government of Tamilnadu and the Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai.
Seats have been increased from two to four in the year 2007 and further to six seats in the year 2010. Average of 100 to 150 out patients get treatment in this department every day including 30 to 50 new patients.
In this department we are doing various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
